Book devotee, inveterate traveler (49 states down, one to go: South Dakota, she’s coming at you), and third-generation graduate of Hollywood High School, Mary loves writers (enough so that she married one 20 years ago) and has spent her career helping them find their voices and fine-tune her own. She was most recently the editor in chief of Los Angeles magazine, which she led to its first National Magazine Award (for Feature Writing) and where she won the 2010 PEN Center USA’s Literary Award for Journalism for her profile of architectural photographer Julius Shulman. Her home’s two tiki bars (indoor and outdoor—it’s Southern California, after all) are not entirely a substitute for living in Hawaii, which she plans to do one day, but they come close.
